About the Role: Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer at HSBC, you will be part of a forward-thinking team that develops powerful software systems and manages large-scale data flows. You will work alongside business analysts, architects, and global delivery teams to build data pipelines, enhance applications, and support digital transformation initiatives.

 Key Responsibilities :

• Develop, design, and test software using Scala, Spark, and related technologies.

• Build and maintain data pipelines using big data frameworks such as Hadoop, Hive, and Spark SQL.

• Collaborate with Business Analysts (BAs) to accurately interpret and implement business requirements.

• Participate in Agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.

• Promote and uphold development standards, including conducting peer code reviews, providing mentorship, and sharing technical knowledge with team members.

• Handle production support, including troubleshooting issues, performance tuning, and ensuring system reliability.

• Contribute to the design and architecture of scalable, efficient, and secure systems.

• Support implementation of CI/CD pipelines using tools like Git, GitHub, Jenkins, and Ansible.

• Ensure solutions are developed in alignment with DevOps principles and Cloud-native design patterns.

Skills & Experience Required :

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate strong technical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to new challenges. The following skills and experience are essential:

✅ Programming & Languages

Proficient in Scala (2.10+) or Java (1.8+)

Comfortable with Python and scripting for automation or data transformation

Experience with RESTful services and API design

✅ Big Data Technologies

In-depth knowledge of Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark, Spark Streaming, Hive, Kafka, and YARN

Familiarity with ETL frameworks, MapReduce, and working with structured/semi-structured datasets

✅ Database & Data Modelling

Strong command over SQL

Understanding of relational and non-relational data modeling techniques

Experience working with ElasticSearch or other analytics/time-series databases

✅ DevOps & Agile Tools

Proficient in version control and collaboration tools like Git, GitHub, and JIRA

Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, Ansible

Exposure to Agile methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban

✅ Platforms & Schedulers

Strong working knowledge of Unix/Linux platforms

Familiarity with job scheduling tools like Apache Airflow and Control-M

✅ Additional Advantages

Understanding of Cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) and cloud-native development

Ability to debug complex systems and identify performance bottlenecks

Strong documentation and communication skills
