About the Role
Are you ready to build next-gen machine learning systems that power productivity across millions of users worldwide? At Atlassian, we are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer II to join our DevInfra Transformations team. In this role, you'll help design, develop, and deploy ML-powered features that impact Atlassian’s internal and external platforms directly influencing how products like Jira, Confluence, and Trello deliver value at scale.
As a Machine Learning Engineer II, you’ll work in a collaborative, innovation-driven environment to solve high-impact business challenges using data science and AI techniques. If you're passionate about operationalizing ML solutions and transforming product experiences using AI, this is the role for you.
Key Responsibilities
• As part of the DevInfra Transformations team, your responsibilities will include:
• Designing and developing production-ready machine learning models for forecasting, automation, and intelligent platform enhancements.
• Collaborating with engineering, data, and analytics teams to integrate ML models into Atlassian’s internal and external product platforms.
• Performing feature engineering, model training, tuning, and validation on large-scale datasets.
• Conducting rigorous experimentation and A/B testing to evaluate and optimize model performance.
• Driving AI functionality across the Atlassian ecosystem, ensuring that ML implementations are scalable, performant, and impactful.
• Providing mentorship and guidance to junior ML engineers, sharing best practices for model development and deployment.
• Identifying opportunities to use AI/ML to optimize the software development lifecycle, improving developer efficiency and system reliability.
Required Qualifications
To hit the ground running, you should bring:
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience).
• 5+ years of industry experience in data science or machine learning roles.
• Deep expertise in Python or Java, with the ability to write clean, scalable, and production-grade code.
• Proficiency with SQL and working with big data frameworks such as Spark.
• Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or Databricks for model training and deployment.
• Proven track record in building and scaling machine learning models using large volumes of data.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain ML concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
• A strong sense of business acumen and the ability to prioritize practical solutions—you understand the 80/20 rule and can balance perfection with real-world deadlines.
•A growth mindset with an agile approach to development and constant iteration.
Nice to Have
• Experience working in SaaS-based consumer or enterprise product environments.
• Knowledge of deep learning frameworks and experience with large language models (LLMs).
• Experience working on ML Ops pipelines and production deployment workflows.
• Ability to thrive in ambiguous problem spaces, breaking down complex challenges into solvable components.
• An understanding of forecasting, anomaly detection, or similar advanced ML techniques.
• Prior experience with tools like Kubernetes, Airflow, or MLFlow is a plus.
